Opal Cremation of San Diego is Here For You and Your Family

Death does not have a specific location, as loved ones can pass away anywhere at any time. Regardless of where your loved one passes, within two hours Opal Cremation’s transportation service can connect with any hospital, assisted living facility, or any other location and arrange for the body to be transported. We’re honored to take care of this so you can have one less thing to think about.

Once the body is transported, it will be kept at one of Opal Cremation’s licensed, climate-controlled holding facilities and preserve it until it’s time to move forward with cremation. After the body is safely at one of our local San Diego facilities, Opal Cremation will secure the death certificate in addition to facilitating and receiving other necessary permits and paperwork. Plus, if a third party is involved in the cremation arrangements, we’re able to coordinate with other groups that might be involved in the plans.

The Cremation Process

When all of the permits and necessary materials are compiled and the parties involved are satisfied with the arrangements, Opal Cremation will then proceed with the cremation process. Family and friends are encouraged to learn how the process works so they know what to expect. For example, some families wish to have the body cremated as soon as it reaches the facility, while other parties might wish to wait until after viewings and funeral arrangements. It all depends on what families, friends, and the deceased want. Opal Cremation offers families and friends the option to be at the facility when the cremation takes place.

Places to Celebrate a Life in San Diego

San Diego is an extraordinary place to hold a celebration of life event. With miles of beaches, terrific weather, and countless attractions, there are many reasons why this spot is widely known as “America’s Finest City”. Whether your loved one grew up in the area, vacationed here, or if it held meaning for them for other reasons, there are numerous places to hold a Celebration of Life event in which to honor and reflect on your loved one’s memory. From a place to gather with family and friends to hold a memorial service, to quiet places to reflect on your own, San Diego has something for every occasion.

If you are looking for a space with plenty of options to honor a loved one’s memory, look no further than Balboa Park. This 1,200 acre cultural oasis can be found in Downtown San Diego, a short walk from many centrally-located hotels. Boasting 17 museums, botanical gardens, and the world renowned San Diego zoo, this provides an excellent setting to celebrate a well lived life since everyone can find something that appeals to them, without the stress or pressure of enclosed spaces. This could be an ideal space to kick off a weekend with family, culminating with a memorial service or Celebration of Life.

Self-care is important, especially when dealing with the stress of a loss. San Diego boasts some of the best spas in Southern California. Consider the Rancho Bernardo Spa, cleverly referred to as a Hide-n-Chic Retreat, located within the Rancho Bernardo Inn on Bernardo Oaks Dr. Offering skin treatments, massage packages, and a saline pool specifically for spa guests, this is a wonderful spot to treat yourself while you process your stress of your loss or following intense family time during a memorial service. Of note, Rancho Bernardo Spa has a sister location, located on Coast Blvd S in La Jolla Cove, called Scripps Inn. Scripps Inn is an intimate hotel near Cuvier Park, located steps from beaches, art museums, restaurants, bars, and galleries.

If your departed loved one enjoyed time on the water, there are so many options available to honor and celebrate their life. With just over 17 miles of shoreline, San Diego provides many options for a memorial evening cruise on the water, or even several companies that offer ash scattering at sea. San Diego boasts 31 different beaches to choose from, including La Jolla Cove, Coronado Beach, Pacific Beach, and more. Many people believe that salt water has healing properties, and what better way to soothe your mind while mourning the death of a love one, than sitting by the sea and reflecting on memories?

San Diego has a plethora of options to celebrate a life well lived, while maximizing time with your family and friends. ‘America’s Finest City’ is a great place to honor a life well-lived while also providing you with opportunities  for self-care and reflection along the way.

San Diego Cremation Options: From Urns to Ash Scattering

Believe it or not, one urn is not like the other. Opal Cremation of San Diego has a variety of ways to preserve your loved one, from temporary vessels to more permanent and mobile keepsakes, like necklaces and stones, and even biodegradable urns. Your intentions for the cremated remains will determine what kind of container you will want, and Opal Cremation can let you know precisely what your options are.

One thing to consider when scattering ashes is that you must abide by local laws pertaining to what you do with them. These can vary by state and we’re happy to help you research these laws if you wish to scatter ashes outside of California.

For example, if you want to scatter ashes in the ocean, you need to make sure of a few things. While burial at sea is covered by the Clean Water Act, you must be at least three nautical miles from shore in water that is at a minimum of 600 feet deep. And when you scatter the ashes, you cannot place anything else into the ocean, unless it is something decomposable like wreaths or flowers. You also are not allowed to scatter non-human remains (meaning pet remains) into the ocean. If you have questions about scattering ashes over water, you can refer to the EPA’s Burial at Sea page which has a lot of relevant information.

When family and friends would like to have the remains and they don’t live in the same state, Opal Cremation is able to allocate the remains according to multiple memorialization inquiries or wishes. In addition, Opal also provides the option of scattering a loved one’s remains off the California coast without needing a witness.
